TCL’s design for Towers Road Residence has won the 2017 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) Victoria ‘Gardens Landscape Architecture Award’.

Located in the Melbourne suburb of Toorak, the garden, completed in late 2015, is the result of close collaboration with the clients and Wood Marsh Architects. Originally engaged by the client to design a garden with a ‘sense of embrace’—a poetic garden of ‘structured chaos’, the completed project is one where verdant, diverse and textured forms provide a contrast, yet respects the muscular and sculptural architectural concrete forms of the building. TCL designed all outdoor elements.

The jury said:

“Towers Road Residence is a lush oasis… that exhibits a bountiful garden design and planting.

The design uses a diversity of planting shapes and textures in a layered landscape that has extensive garden areas.

The garden frames a series of spaces that meander around the house and forms a lush surrounds to the architecture.

It curates an experience of being immersed in a sculptural oasis from all aspects.”

The AILA presents the award each year in recognition of projects that contribute to the role and understanding of the garden in contemporary society and culture.
