Drawing together wood, polished stainless steel and bronze sculptural forms, the works connect land, sea and sky while carrying stories of cultural continuity into the contemporary landscape. The material language is integral to the narrative: polished stainless steel reflects the changing light, sea and surrounding landscape, while bronze speaks to age, endurance and the passage of time, gradually developing its own patina.
With fabrication by Tony Rosella, individual elements have been developed through prototypes, mould-making, casting and detailed metalwork. The emu feathers are formed as sculptural bronze pieces, while layers of bronze string wrap the message sticks.
TCL’s role has been to support Karl’s self- determination through a co-design process led by him as Elder/Traditional Owner and knowledge holder of this story. TCL assisted in bringing this cultural creative design into a physical public space, working through design development, detailing, engineering and fabrication, and integrating the markers with the existing boardwalk. The result is not conceived simply as an object in the landscape, but as a living story grounded in Country and positioned where land, sea and sky meet
